    Adayalangal the surprise winner

2008/4/9 15:46:28 Last year, the State Awards were decried as not having good choices. But this time, the jury, headed by Jahnu Barua, have kept the awards predictable with not many surprises.

While the majority of the movies in the competition received something or other, Adoor's Naalu Pennungal got no major awards.

Adayalangal, directed by MG Sasi emerging as the best film, was the big suprise. It also bagged Sasi the best director award and the best cinematography award for M J Radhakrishnan.

The awards for acting were all predictable with Mohanlal bagging the best actors award for his performance in Paradesi, Meera Jasmine added one more award with her sensitive performance in Ore Kadal.

Lakshmi Gopalaswamy was named the second best actress for her performance in Thaniye while veteran actor Bharath Murali was named the second best actor for Pranayakalam and Vinodhayathra. Jagathy was given a special award for his great presentations in Arabikatha, Veeralipattu and Paradesi.

    T G Ravi got a special mention.

All together this year's awards are sure to have pleased almost everyone, with almost no questions about its integrity.

    Award controversies in Kerala

    2008/4/9 15:49:07

Every year the Kerala State Film awards brings its own share of controversies. The 2007 awards were announced by Education Minister M.A Baby on Tuesday (April 8) in Thiruvananthapuram, which stirred a hornet's nest.

The favourite horse the master director Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Nalu Pennungal, which was expected to win the best film and director ended up with two minor awards in technical department of art and costume. And to rub it in, the Jury headed by noted Assameese director Jahnu Barua said "the director (Adoor Gopalakrishnan) has failed to put together and connect the four short stories as a film".

The jury instead lavished five awards on Adayalangal, directed by the little known M.G Sasi. The film won in the best feature film, director, cameraman, processing film lab, and a special jury award for veteran T.G Ravi for acting in the film. Adayalangal, is yet to be commercially released in theatres nor has it been screened at any festivals.

More shocking was the way Sreenivasan, noted actor, writer and director was totally ignored by the award committee. Last year was memorable for Sreenivasan as he had Lal Jose directed Arabikatha, in which he had come out with an outstanding performance as a communist leader who fails to come into grip with globalization. Probably his anti-communist tirade cost him the award! The award committee says off-the record that till the last round, he was a strong contender before Mohanlal piped him to the post for the best actor.

Sreenivasan's much acclaimed story and script of Kathaparayumbol was also forgotten by the award committee which gave it only the popular film with artistic merit award. Another strong contender for the best director and best actor Ore Kadal was also ignored. Shyama Prasad its director is the son of O.Rajagopal a former BJP Minister, and a bitter critic of the CPI (M) led government in the state.

When contacted Shyama Prasad said: " I understand the limitations of the jury and how it functions as an ex-jury member, and has no complaints to register. The jury has its own political ideology; still I strongly feel Mammootty should have won the award for the best actor for Ore Kadal"

'I've to have a central part now': Kareena

    2007/1/29 9:57:31

Kareena has set high standards for herself after winning the best actress STAR Screen award for "Omkara", beating popular choice Kajol in "Fanaa". The award has inspired Kareena to work harder. "Getting my first popular best actress award at the beginning of the year just elates me. I'm now getting the right scripts like Mani Ratnam's 'Lajjo'. Now, I want to do only good films. It's so easy just to be in big projects and get big money. I don't believe in that. I've to have a central part now," said Kareena.

What about the cameo in "Don"? "That one song is running in all the night clubs. All the college kids are dancing to it. I've one big hit to dance to."

Kareena says Kajol, who lost the popular award to her, was genuinely happy for her.

"By chance Kajol was sitting right next to me when my name was announced. She was so genuinely pleased for me. Kajol along with my sister Karisma have always been my idols. Both have had their share of awards. Now, it's my turn.

"I've received critics' awards. But this is my first taste of popular awards since 'Refugee'. 'Omkara' has been a great experience for me. People still come to me on flights and the gym to tell me how much they liked me in 'Omkara'."

Everyone who counted were there at the awards to share her.

"Karisma was there and so was my mom and Shahid (Kapur). They were so happy for me. Shahid was nominated for 'Vivah'. But he was so happy when I won. I had gone only to perform. But I came back with an award." She says she has tasted blood. "I want to win at every awards function this season."

She got to perform with the legendary Helen.

"It was a great moment. Of course, I knew her from before. I'm a filmy kid, remember? Helen aunty has seen me from my childhood. The Moranis (film financiers and owners of event management company Cineyug) suggested I perform with Helen Aunty.

"They suggested I drive onto stage in a sports car with the 'Don' music playing. When the sports car came in I could hear everyone from my own fraternity cheering me. "It felt good. Then I danced to my version of 'Yeh mera dil' in 'Don'. After that Helen aunty came in to dance to her own version of 'Yeh mera dil' from the old 'Don'."

Kareena can't stop raving about Helen. "She was so gracious. She was wondering why people were comparing her 'Don' with mine because times have changed. She said my dance was more dazzling and sexy. That was so sweet of her."

Talk veers to Kareena's sister. "Karisma is looking like a million bucks. When she went on stage at the awards event to give Hrithik the best actor award, a collective gasp went up in the audience. She's pencil slim. And so am I these days. I'm working really hard on staying slim."

She is not going for any more holidays. "Except one, for Shahid's birthday on Feb 25," she corrected herself. "Otherwise, I'm raring to get back to work. I've put on my running shoes."

    Mammootty's Ore Kadal in trouble

    2007/7/10 13:08:15

It seems to be the season of making films with stolen stories! In Kollywood, there are four similar cases pending in the court including the one on Rajinikanth's Shivaji. Now it is the turn for Malluwood. The Mammootty starrer film Ore Kadal is also caught in the same problem. Rukhmani, wife of late writer Kumaran has raised a complaint that the story of the film was written by her husband. She claimed that the director and producer have made the film without prior approval from her.

Yesterday, she said, "My husband Kumaran was a known writer in Malayalam. Few months ago he translated the Bengali novel 'Heerag Deepthi' written by Sunil Gangobathyai into Malayalam and titled it as Ore Kadal. He made some changes in the Malayalam version, which were not in the original content.

Now, director Shyam Prasad is directing the film in the same title and story with Mammootty. He didn't event get our permission to use my husband's story. In fact, the copyright for the novel is still in my husband's name. Now he is not alive. So, naturally I'm the owner for the copyright. Now, I'm planning to move the court to seek the ban on the film's shooting.

    Ore Kadal

    2007/8/18 14:17:46

Shyamaprasad is one of the few directors in Malayalam who believe in making good cinema. His new film Ore Kadal explores the complex web of human relationships.

It stars Mammooty, Narein, Meera Jasmine and Ramya Krishnan in the lead roles. The film produced by Vindhyan in the banner of Rasika Entertainments is distributed by Emil And Eric Entertainments.

Dr. S.R. Nathan (Mammootty) is an internationally acclaimed economist a la Dr. Amartya Sen. Nathan is a thinker and he is focused on fiscal and economic matters and developments. Though an intellectual of the top order, Nathan is a loner and an alcoholic.

Nathan is careless about the way he dresses and often appears shabby. In a strange circumstance, Nathan meets Deepthi (Meera Jasmine) who is married to Narain. Soon the husband and wife get entangled with the economist. Ore Kadal is a very intimate study of man- woman relationship set in modern times.

Says Shayamaprasad: “The film is based on Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhya’s classic “Heerak Deepti”, a love story set in a very intense and difficult situation”. The film Music is by Ouseppachan, camera is by Azhagappan.

'Ore Kadal': The pick of the Onam cinema package

    2007/9/6 11:12:51

Onam came and went without creating any buzz at the box office. Director Shyamaprasad's offbeat 'Ore Kadal' made it to the top position.

The top five Malayalam films are:

    1. 'Ore Kadal' - Director Shyamaprasad's film is about an affair between a megalomaniac social scientist and a simple housewife, with Mammootty, Meera Jasmine and Narein. The film makes it to the top position because of its daring theme and flawless performance by the lead actors.

    2. 'Alibhai' - Mohanlal's much-hyped Onam film, directed by his favourite Shaji Kailas, disappoints his fans as it has nothing new to offer.

    3. 'Arabikatha' - Director Lal Jose has yet another winner under his belt. The film is about a Leftist forced to go and work in the Gulf. Sreenivasan does a good job as the hero.

    4. 'Kichamani MBA' - Suresh Gopi tries to change his image by trying his hand at the comedy, directed by first time director Samad Mankada.

    5. 'Naivedyam' - Veteran director Lohithadas tries a tested formula of a love story with newcomers, including Vinumohan, actor Saikumar's nephew. The story does less than justice to the talent of newcomers.

The 52nd Annual Filmfare Awards were held in Mumbai on Saturday evening (February 24). This time round the awards ceremony has had a ‘makeover’, with the event being a closed-door black-tie one.

    Hrithik beat SRK to it

2006 proved that the new superstar on the block was Hrithik Roshan. And so it came as no surprise when Hrithik won this year's Filmfare award for Best Male Actor in a leading role for ‘Dhoom 2’. Hrithik, who was also nominated for his performance in ‘Krrish’, underplayed his contribution as expected.

“It feels great, its Filmfare, its an acknowledgment of all the hard work that we all put in as a team in Dhoom 2, and I stand here as a symbol of that team work,” said Hrithik.

Hrithik beat competitors like Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Shahrukh Khan. SRK, who was nominated for ‘Don’ and ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’and is well-known for his love for awards, didn't seem too concerned about losing out.

“No, no, no. I am never disappointed, see my logic is very simple. If I get it the awards look good, if I don't get it they don't know what they're doing...nah (laughs). I had a great time, I think (Hrithik) deserved it completely. I'm ok, as long as I am entertaining people,” said SRK.

    Kareena wows critics again

Kajol with comeback film ‘Fanaa’, walked away with Best Female Actor female in a leading role. On the other hand, Kareena Kapoor's Desdemona turn in ‘Omkara’ got her the Critic's Award for Best Actress.

“In the critic's category, it’s my third award. So I think I'm always on their good side. And I think Omkara was a film which deep down in my heart, I always hoped I would get acknowledged for, because the whole team worked really hard to make a different kind of a film,” gushed Kareena.

Meera Jasmine becomes more spiritually inclined!

    2007/8/16 14:56:07
