Amitabh Bachchan turns 70

Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan completes 69 years and has entered into 70s on Tuesday.

The birthday boy wrote in his blog, about his busy schedule at KBC. Beginning at the beginning he wrote about his birth in the most crowded place of Allahabad. “I was born today! The 11th of October 1942 in Allahabad in a small private maternity outfit run by a missionary Dr Brar, in the most crowded market area of the city, Katra. I was brought home by my parents in the best possible transport machinery that they could afford – a tonga ! Wrapped in a ‘gudari’ I still refer to many that I am a ‘gudari ka lal’ – a human that is affiliated with the cheapest form of clothing.”

“I have noticed on many occasions that the life and the style of those that live in such conditions, are closest to me in temperament. There is a certain sense of attachment every time I come in close contact with people and circumstances that narrate to me stories of the time. That is my most alluring possession. I have complete ease and identify myself with those that inhabit those lands,” he further noted.

That is the reason why the present edition of KBC has a special feature of bringing in the underprivileged people to the hot seat to help them with the little money that spells a fortune to them. Every week you have one such participant, besides a celebrity playing for charity on the last day of the week. (INN)

Amitabh's mother Teji Bachchan is dead

    2007/12/21 14:23:37

Amitabh Bachchan's mother Teji Bachchan passed away on Friday. She was 93.

She had been ailing for over a year, and was admitted at Lilavati hospital in Bandra, a western suburb of Mumbai. In November, she was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital after her condition became serious.

Amitabh was very close to his mother and she was a pillar of support for the Bachchan family. One of the first things Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai did after they got married was visit her at the hospital.

Teji Bachchan was an important part of the Big B's professional life as well. For instance, in the original script of Coolie, Amitabh's character was supposed to die. But she requested director Manmohan Desai to change the ending.

Amitabh, the man, is more admirable: Sawant

2006/10/11 15:55:22 He is the man who transforms Amitabh Bachchan into his various avatars -- be they Jai, Vijay, Dinanath Chauhan or the latest Gabbar Singh.

As the superstar turns 64 today, his make-up man Deepak Sawant says, "More than Amitabh the great actor, it is Amitabh the great man who is more admirable.

"Of course he is a very good actor, but over the years I have learnt from him how to be a good human being. He does not speak unnecessarily, and treats everybody with great respect. He did my film only on the basis of my personal equation with him, and I will never forget that," Sawant said.

"I have been doing his make-up for the past 30 years, and though we had a misunderstanding in between when we did not work with each other for several years, I knew I would go back to him."

Sawant, who recently produced the Bhojpuri film "Ganga", pulled off a casting coup of sorts by featuring Bachchan and Hema Malini together in it.

"I had asked him to do the film but he refused at first. Later, however, when he looked at the script, he instantly agreed and the kind of commitment he showed on the sets and during the filming was unbelievable," he said.

Sawant also doubled as Amitabh's make-up man during the film.

    And the AB-SRK war continues

2006/12/6 19:27:16 What happens when two titans come face to face in the competitive arena in Bollywood? Fire works, ego clashes and a war of words is inevitable. Like the Amitabh Bachchan-Shah Rukh Khan war which was one of the biggest star wars first reported in July, 2005. It was alleged that whatever Amitabh did, Shah Rukh wanted to do the same, but bigger and better.

Even if it meant doing a remake of the Amitabh Bachchan hit Don or endorsing the same brands as Big B or working with the same banners, SRK did not shy away from the opportunity to match footsteps with the stalwart. With Shah Rukh Khan taking over the KBC mantle from Amitabh Bachchan, their war has reached another level. All this and more, when the two vehemently deny any such bad vibes.

Amitabh Bachchan considers Bollywood more creative than Hollywood

    2007/4/12 11:07:36

Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan dismisses the notion that Indian films should aspire to win Oscars, saying that Bollywood was more creative than Hollywood.

India turns out about 1,000 films in 12 languages each year. No Indian film has ever won an Oscar, although Mother India and Lagaan have been nominated.

Bachchan, who is currently visiting Britain to receive several awards, said that he did not believe an Indian film winning an Oscar was the "ultimate recognition for any great film" and added that it was offensive to suggest that.

"I do believe that Indian film has its own exhibition," Bachchan said, referring to the International Indian Film Academy's annual awards. "Whereas we respect the Oscars and what they are, our creativity is the best," he added.

Bollywood, which makes three times as many films a year as Hollywood, has captivated cinemagoers around the world with its musical extravaganzas.

Bachchan welcomed films that married Western and Indian cinema such as 2004's Bride and Prejudice which starred his would-be daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai and which was a co-production featuring Indian and Western actors.

"Any kind of marriage is going to be good when creative interests are common," Bachchan said.

"I do believe that if the United Kingdom wants to make a film with India, there can only be benefits and vice versa."

Bachchan said that, although he had never appeared in any Hollywood film, he would certainly consider roles from the West.

At first he denied to do particular scene, but when director Puri Jagannath and Amitabh Bachchan himself convinced him to do the scene, Sonu with great difficulty has completed the scene. Hits and misses at 65

    2007/10/11 8:22:22

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan turns 65 on Thursday.

The year 2007 has seen the highs and lows and all that lies in between for Big B.

His first release in 2007 was Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya. While the audiences were less than warm in their reception of the royal guard, the film is now westward bound, perhaps to the Oscar red carpet.

His romancing the very young Jiah Khan in Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd was something Bachchan fans did not want to see. Silence, quite predictably, greeted the onscreen steam.

Happily things got a little better in the next film, Cheeni Kum, where he was again wooing someone much younger. The film was sweet enough for the audiences to swallow.

Interestingly Cheeni Kum released alongside his other film- the multi starrer Shootout at Lokhandwala. While the film fared well, Big B shrugged off any credit since his was a very small role.

Then came Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, which was easily the biggest flop of the year.

But everyone forgot Jhoom when Ram Gopal Varma's much talked about ode to Sholay hit the silver screen.

Far from bursting onto the screens, this was stamped out by the audience. Amitabh may have always wanted to play Gabbar, but Babban did not quite match up to either cinema's favourite villain or indeed his own role as Jai.

There is another RGV Bachchan collaboration to look forward to before the year ends.

For Big B perhaps the birthday resolution could be to choose more wisely and less freely.

2006/11/8 20:14:17 The fastest filmmaker of present times Priyadarshan is ready with his next film Bhagam Bhag that releases on 22nd December all over. The film has a unique comic pairing of Akshay Kumar and Govinda the best in the business.

And now Priyadarshan wants to direct Amitabh Bachchan for one of the story ideas he has in mind. But he denies any development on the project and rubbishes the rumours that say that the film is titled Assasin and is a remake of the Hollywood classic The Day of The Jackal.

Says Priyadarshan, It is true I want Amitji to play a principal role in my film. But nothing is finalized. I still havent approached him for the role yet, forget he asking for the script. And my movie is not The Day of The Jackal but something different. Just the idea came from there.

Priyadarshan has earlier directed Amitabh Bachchan in ad films but not in a feature film yet.

Big Bs second female director Leena Yadav!!

    2007/1/30 11:20:09

Leena Yadav, who made her directorial debut in an offbeat film (Shabd), is now set to direct Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan in her second movie.

Even though Shabd (starring Sanjay Dutt , Aishwarya Rai and Zayed Khan ) was a flop at the box-office, Leena Yadav has managed to rope in Bollywoods most sought-after star for her next movie, which, thankfully, will be less quirky than her first film.

Interestingly, in his entire acting career Mr. Bachchan has worked only once with a female director: that was in Armaan , directed by Honey Irani.

Leenas film, yet untitled, will be Big Bs second one with a female director.

According to Leena, only Mr. Bachchan can play the protagonist in her movie. The films story is a dramatic tale and Big B plays the pivotal part in the plot.

Bachchan knows Leena through her cinematographer husband Aseem Bajaj.

On a different front, Amitabh has also agreed to work in a fantasy flick to be produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and to be directed by his assistant Ram Madhvani.

Chopras forthcoming movie Eklavya already has Amitabh in the main role.

Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan starrer stalls near finish line

    2007/5/15 11:55:10

Filming of God Tussi Great Ho has been completed except for a song and dance sequence featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan. The Big B recently pulled out of a schedule shoot at the last minute without giving any reasons.

According to Mumbai Mirror sources, Amitabh did not want Salman Khan and Aishwarya Bachchan (who is shooting for Jodha Akbar in the same studio) to come face to face and cause embarrassment to both parties.

"The best way to ensure this (Ash and Salman not meeting) was to cancel the shoot altogether," says the Mirror.

Sources from the Nitin Desai Studio confirmed the news saying that they had erected an elaborate set for the film but that Mr. Bachchan had pulled out at the last minute for 'reasons best known to him'.

The studio later found out that Bachchan wanted to avoid an awkward situation since Ash was shooting there the same day.

However, according to Rumi Jafferi, director of the film, the shoot was cancelled because the preparations by the crew were 'shoddy'. "We will wrap up next month and shoot the song then," he concluded.
