Did you know that Bollywood super-brat Salman Khan has turned into a painter of considerable repute? If you are still unaware of his latent talents, let us tell you that one of his paintings has recently sold for Rs one crore! It remains to be seen, however, whether the buyer was motivated by his love of art or simply sucking up to Salman.
At a recent Mumbai art auction organized by Ramola Bachchan for Plan India, a well-known charity, Salman Khan's painting was about to be sold for Rs.20 lakhs, which any novice artist would consider 'very good'! But Salman Khan was confident that his art was unique and extraordinary.
So when Plan India seemed to accept the bid of Rs.20 lakhs, he walked onto the stage and pulled out his offering from the auction and waited for an opportunity to sell it for a better price. It seems that Ramesh, an art lover, heard about Sallubhai pulling out his painting from the Bachchan auction and contacted the actor.
When actor Salman Khan takes a liking to anyone he sendsthem a painting. And that’s exactly what happened to business tycoon Vijay Mallya. One day, hefound himself looking at a painting gifted by the star to him.
“I received a painting from Salman Khan at this very bungalow. Just like that! He decided to send me a painting and I was more than surprised,” recalls Mallya, who decided to put it up in his villa in southern France.
“I regard art as an investment and take pride in collecting artworks from around the world. I have the best artists’ works hanging on my walls in my villa. There is Picasso, there is Renoir…the best artists from around the world. I’ve put up Salman’s painting alongside them,” he adds.
Mallya says that the international celebrities, he has hosted in his villa, have enquired about Salman’s painting. “I had a couple of international celebrities over during the Cannes Festival. All of them, who were art aficionados, were enquiring about Salman’s painting. I’m amazed at the talent that Salman has, and why he does not flaunt it,” he adds.
Salman, on the other hand, informs that he’spainting for Mallya again. “I am doing one more painting for him and it will be ready soon. He has done a lot for me and my foundation (Being Human). Whenever I needed any help from him of any kind, he was just one call away,” Salman says.
Salman till date has never decided to auction his paintings and always presents his paintings to close friends or people he admires.
Salman Khan is taking his new love - painting- very seriously. Sallu (who stars in Sanjay Leela's upcoming Saawariya with Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Rani Mukerji) has now suggested to Bhansali that he would like to paint his own impressions of the film.
Bhansali is, of course, pretty gung-ho about this. Our well-placed source says, "Bhansali has decided to give a few stills of Saawariya to Salman so that he can paint them and thereby take his film to a larger canvas."
"Salman liked this idea. He will start working on the Saawariya paintings very soon," the source adds.
The Saawariya paintings will be up for auction a few days before the film hits the theatres on November 9.
Some time back, the Right to Education auction for underprivileged kids by Plan Utsav at a five-star suburban hotel had a painting by Salman up for auction. The highest bid was Rs 20 lakh and Salman did not sell the painting as the price he had in mind was not met. That same painting was later sold for Rs 1 crore.
Over the last few months, Salman has been taking technique lessons from painter Nilesh Vede. His father, Salim Khan, too has been egging him on to paint more often.
One of Salim's favorites is an abstract which hangs in the corridor of their house. That painting has images of people from different religious communities.
Another 12 canvasses to go and Salman is hard at work and is all set to showcase his work in an exhibition.
Salman Khan is all set to showcase his painting in an exhibition, the proceeds of which will go to his Salman Khan Foundation. Though neither a date nor venue has been fixed, Salman is furiously painting these days.
“I need to complete 12 more paintings. Painting isn’t a big deal. Ask art students and they will tell you. What is important is the concept that you work on and how you translate your concept into art.”
And what’s his concept? “Holy men from all religions. If you closely look at the pictures of these men, you realise they all look similar, till they cover their heads and there starts the division. They become maulvis, pandits, priests and all that. We differentiate ourselves through religion, otherwise, everyone would have been the same,” the actor explains.
In his typical eccentric style, Salman pulls out one his paintings from a charity event only to freely gift another to his best friend Sajid Nadiadwala!
Few can really claim to understand what goes on in Salman Khan's head, but most people know that his antics are nothing short of eccentric.
Recently, the actor pulled out a painting he had donated to a fundraising dinner organised by Plan India Initiative (for the welfare of deprived children) saying that the bidding price of Rs 20 lakh didn't match his desired amount!
Days later, the actor freely gave away another one of his prized paintings to best buddy Sajid Nadiadwala.
Says a source close to Sajid, "Last week, Salman dropped by Sajidbhai's office with the painting.
A lot of Salman's friends have seen the painting and have been asking him to sell it to them, but Salman chose to give it to Sajidbhai, who was stunned!
He doesn't have a single painting in his office cabin, but for the first time Sajidbhai has put up Salman's painting in a prominent place.
It speaks volumes of the affection both have for each other."
Salman has been learning how to paint for the last one year and has a number of canvasses put up at his Bandra residence. Adds the source, "Salman and Sajidbhai go back more than 15 years.
Their first film together was Jeet, and since then they have made five films together including Judwa, Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge and Jaan-E-Mann."
Sajid and Salman's next film together is a Rs 55 crore mega project with international actors, which will be shot in Tokyo (Japan). There is also a buzz that the duo will be coming together to make Judwaa 2.
It is learnt that the script is under finalisation and it's unsure whether David Dhawan will return to direct the film.
Currently, Sajid is busy with his next release Heyy Baby! slated for July, directed by Sajid Khan and starring Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan, Riteish Deshmukh and Vidya Balan.
2006/10/28 16:42:54 Salman Khan has a new love. It’s painting. After trying his hand at scriptwriting and photography, the creative actor has now set his sights on the canvas.
Salman has recently started brushing up on his painting skills and has been taking technique lessons from painter Nilesh Vede for the last few months.
Some of Salman’s portraits of still figures and human faces adorn the walls of his and his parents’ apartments at Galaxy Apartments in Bandra. Salman has also started gifting paintings to some of his close friends.
Vede is hesitant to talk about his star student, “It’s something very personal and Salman sir won’t like it.” All he admits is that he is coaching Salman and was introduced to the actor by a family friend. Salman’s dad, Salim Khan, is more forthcoming.
“Salman has been a talented artiste right from childhood. It’s something he got from his mother (Salma) who is an accomplished artist herself.
Our farmhouse is adorned by her paintings. She paints landscapes, still figures — anything that captures her fancy.
Neither my two sons, Arbaaz, Sohail or my two daughters, Alvira and Arpita are like me, they cannot even draw a line. But Salma’s specialised talent has come into Salman. He has been painting since he was a child,” says the proud papa.
Talking about Salman’s painting lessons, Senior Khan says, “He always had the gift but now Salman wants to learn the basics and get the right direction.
He has the talent but he needs to hone it. Practice makes one perfect in one’s craft. Salman’s been taking a bit of help from Nilesh to go in the right direction on how to learn and improve on his craft.”
Salman has been painting regularly and Khan says, “He has finished nearly 15 to 20 paintings already.
Salman keeps giving away his paintings to people who like them. He has given one away to Praful Patel and another to David’s wife, Lalli Dhawan. I keep telling Salman that he should have a charity show of his paintings. People would love to see his art.”
What is Salim Khan’s favourite painting that Salman has done? “ All of them are very good but one of my favorites is an abstract which hangs in my passage. It has images of people from different religious communities.
The first painting that he did was of his dogs, My Jaan and My Son. I loved that. He truly did justice to them. After that people encouraged him to paint some more and now he has taken it up as a craft.”
Who is Nilesh?
He is a 25-year old successful artiste from Chembur who has done his diploma from the JJ School of Arts and a commercial arts course from the Raheja School of Arts. He has been painting for more than five years and has over 2000 paintings in his collections.
Vede who loves to paint Buddha in his various forms has held exhibitions of his paintings, the most recent one being at the Nehru Centre Art Gallery in May. Vede paints everything from landscapes to abstracts and still forms and has painting workshops.
Now that Salman Khan has mended ways with his former foe and filmmaker Subhash Ghai, it's only natural for him to shower Ghai with gifts. Recently, when Ghai celebrated his wedding anniversary and the anniversary of his production company, Mukta Arts at a suburban hotel we spotted Sallu and girlfriend Katrina Kaif making a grand entry armed with a neatly wrapped canvas.
The painting depicts a cityscape replete with religious symbols and a few towering buildings. Ghai says, “It's an extremely precious gift. Like all of his paintings, even this one has a strong social message. The painting reflects secularism and peaceful co-existence.”
However, the shy Sallu asked Ghai to uncover it only when he reaches home. Later, Sallu was seen discussing his paintings with other guests. An eyewitness says, “Salman didn't want Ghai to unveil the painting at the party. He is extremely shy and doesn't like showing off his work to people.”
The painting now graces a wall in Ghai's living room. He further informs that his Bandra apartment can be seen in the painting. “After having taken a closer look I realised that even my towering apartment can be seen in the picture,” says Ghai.
We hear that Sallu has been religiously making sketches during the outdoor schedule of his films. A source close to the actor says, “Salman doesn't have any specific timing as such. But whenever he has some free time, he gets busy with his paintings. He has made a few more sketches during the Austria schedule of Yuvraj.” mumbai news
After Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif now Shah Rukh Khan tried his hands on canvas. King Khan and famous artist MF Husain painted a canvas together to celebrate 60 years of Indian independence at a charity auction in Bonhams, London.
Shah Rukh stated that he has been an admirer of Husain’s work since childhood. The duo worked on a painting which was inspired by a scene from filmmaker K.Asif's Mughal-e-Azam, with Anarkali in Prince Saleem's arms.
The painting was auctioned for Rs 1.2 crore. The auction also had other collaborative efforts by celebrities including Naseeruddin Shah, Farhan Mujib and Paresh Maity with curry king Sir Ghulam Noon.
After a brief hiatus, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has returned to the micro-blogging site Twitter today and posted a sketch of himself made by actress Sonakshi Sinha.
On September 13, after drawing flak for his comments on 26/11 comments in an interview given to a Pakistan TV channel, the Dabangg star had hinted at quitting Twitter. He had later apologised for his comments.
However, one of the most controversial actors of Bollywood today returned much to the relief of his more than four lakh followers on the site.
"Kamaal karte ho yaar! Thank u fr wanting me to cm bak n sorry to leave but do understand that I tweet any thing n me frnds n family panic (sic)," was Salman's first comeback tweet.
He then embarked on a photo-uploading spree, which included a painting by his Dabangg co-star Sonakshi.
The painting is similar to the film's poster depicting Salman wearing glares with glittering heart-shaped reflections on it.
The painting also attracted comments, with actor Neil Nitin Mukesh saying, "Its awesome! Love it already."
Soon after Salman returned to Twitter he was flooded with comments from his fans. The 44-year-old actor posted funny pics of some fingers and palm.
In another tweet today Salman wrote, "hindu muslim sikh isahi sab hai bhai bhai. Na ladna na jhagadna bus ek doosare se pyaar karna. Hum sab saath saath hai (Hindu, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians are all brothers... they must not fight and instead love each other. We are all together)".
Interestingly, Salman follows only three people on Twitter - his sister Arpita, brother Arbaaz and Sonakshi.
Well, actually Salman has just promised to show Ali the Taj when she visits India to promote their comedy film 'Marigold', but knowing how large hearted the actor is, he could well have presented it to her if he had owned it. However, he could never get a monument like the Taj made even for his lady love because that would leave him no time for painting and partying, even chinkara and black buck shoots!
Post his break up from ex-girlfriend Rosa, Saif Ali Khan has been experiencing the quietude of being single again.
Saif made no bones about admitting in an interview recently that he sometimes feels lonely and longs for a partner again in his life. However, the actor also said that he is enjoying his single status and he plans to stay so for some time.
To help Saif do something creative during his reflective days, Salman Khan , who is a friend to him, has been encouraging Saif to take up painting and sketching.
Salman has given Saif some basic tips about sketching (form, proportion and perspective etc.). Saif has shown interest in the art and is pretty impressed by Salman’s skills.
Inspired by Sallu, Saif has made one or two sketches so far. Saif now looks forward to hone his skills with pencil and paintbrush further in the coming months.
By the way, Saif already has a very good sense for music. He is quite a deft guitar player.
As for Bollywood, Saif is ready to immerse himself in work. He will soon begin shooting for Abbas Mastan movie Race . Saif has also given his nod to director Kunal Kohli’s next movie and a Yashraj production that will star Akshay Kumar and Anil Kapoor .
For the time being, Saif is looking forward to the release of his movie Tara Rum Pum on April 27.
Salman Khan has his own unique sense of fashion. He will be combining that with his other passion – painting – in his own fashion line.
Yes, the handsome Khan is going to get his finger in another pie – this time, it is all for a charitable cause. Salman is planning to launch his brand of clothes soon. The profits from the sales will go towards his charity foundation called ‘Being Human’.
Now, the obvious question popping in your head is – “will Salman himself design the clothes?”
No, his sister Alvira will take the lead. Salman will also rope in some of the cutting edge designers to design clothes for youths. Salman will certainly give his inputs in the designs.
But his major contribution will be that his paintings will be embossed on the T-shirts, jeans and other accessories that his fashion brand intends to launch.
As we all know, Salman is an avid painter and sketcher. Most of his paintings have the theme of communal harmony, which the actor feels should be promoted among today’s youth through fashion.
2011/4/9 12:55:59 Salman Khan might be notorious for his devil-may-care attitude, but that doesn't make him any less popular among his fans. A crazy female fan is all set to paint the actor in zero gravity and is being considered for Guinness Book Of World Records.
Ankita Prakash Joshi is a huge fan of Sallu an d had completed his first sketch on March 27 in Florida, USA.
She told Mid Day, "Salman Khan is my lucky charm and I decided to paint him as my very first zero gravity painting."
Though Ankita's paintings are mainly metaphysical, she made an exception for Salman Khan. Says she, "He is my favourite actor and I love his personality. People may think I am crazy, but this is what I wanted to do."
The 27-year-old student of Sophia Polytechnic Applied Arts wants to gift the paintings to her favourite star. "I would be greatly honored if he accepts," she added.
Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif has unveiled her hitherto kept secret talent of painting as well.
The model turned actress from London is actually quite an accomplished painter. She recently a portrait of Gandhi, that she had painted herself, to Vipul Shah, the director of her latest movie.
Shah confessed to being surprised, especially since he had already directed her previously in ‘Namaste London’. ‘I never knew that she had this side to her’, Shah was quoted as saying. He felt that Katrina had natural talent and praised the painting.
Vipul Shah said that he would cherish the painting a lot, considering the amount of time and energy that went into it. Katrina took several months to finish this 12 foot tall painting.
After painting, this time Salman has taken to writing a script which he hopes to make into a film tentatively titled Veer. However this is not the first time that Salman has penned a script, years ago Salman penned the script for the film Chandrmukhi which starred himself and Sridevi, unfortunately the film was a flop. Well now there is a buzz in the industry that once again Sallu bhai has penned a script which is close to his heart, will the film star himself and who will the lead actress be, may be real life girlfriend Katrina?
Well to know more about what the script of the film is about and who will play the leads, audiences will just have to wait as everyone who knows about the project seems to be pretty tight lipped about it. However some sources claim that Sajid Khan who is currently working on his first film Hey Baby will direct Salman’s film. But Sajid on his part claims there is no truth to these rumours. May be Salman Khan will shed some light on what’s the real dope on his secret script!
Salman Khan plans to revive producer J.P. Singh's London Dreams which was shelved long ago. The film was shelved after a few scenes were shot at the Golden Temple at Amritsar by director Rajkumar Santoshi. Santoshi had then cast Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra in the lead.
The movie is all about a rock band in England. Salman and Ajay play childhood friends, who are also rock musicians. Santoshi had planned a lot of Western actors for the film. Eighty per cent of the film was to be shot in London and the remaining portion in India.
A source says, "It is not known whether the producer and director plan the film with the same starcast, but Singh went to meet Salman at his farm house in Panvel. He got kebabs, specially made from Delhi for Salman and narrated his grievances about the film getting shelved. The producer, it is said, had to sell two of his bungalows to repay Rs 10 crore that he had taken from financiers for the film. On hearing his grievances, Salman decided to help the producer. He called Santoshi immediately and asked him to revive the project. Singh had tears in his eyes with Salman's gesture."
Our source adds, "Singh had then made payments to all the cast and crew. Santoshi was paid Rs 3.5 crore, Salman was paid Rs 2 crore, Ajay got Rs 1.5 crore, Preity was paid Rs 1 crore and Priyanka was paid Rs 1.5 crore. It is also said that Eros had also acquired the film for a Rs 40 crore deal. But hearing of the deal, director Santoshi had demanded an extra Rs 8 crore from the producer. When Singh refused to pay more, problems cropped up and finally the project was shelved."
In the recent past, many actors have signed multi-crore multi-film deals, but Salman Khan has gone ahead and created a record of sorts. The enfant terrible of our filmi duniya has just reached an agreement with Ashtavinayaka films: Sallu will make a never-heard-of Rs 24 crore in his next.
These figures are difficult to digest even by Bollywood's latest standards. After this deal, Salman Khan has become the highest paid actor in the industry. Our source explains, “Salman Khan has signed Ashtavinayaka's new film for a whopping amount. While the maximum Shah Rukh has taken is Rs 3.5 crore per film, and the highest Hrithik has gone is a three-film deal with Adlabs for Rs 35 crores, Sallu has managed to walk away with a really meaty deal.” If reports are to be believed, Priyadarshan will direct the film.
Salman will, however, not get all the money at one go. It will be divided and will include his remuneration, 30 per cent of the profits that the film makes and money from music and satellite rights. Our source says, “According to the deal, Salman will get Rs 12.5 crore as his remuneration for the film, he will also be the 30 per cent partner in the profits generated (which will come from distributors). Salman will also get a 30 per cent share from the music and satellite rights of the film. The entire amount will be over Rs 24 crore. Not just that, he has also signed an agreement saying that 15 years after the release of the film, Salman will own, free and clear, the negative rights of the film.”
While Salman remained unavailable for comment, Parag Desai, the official spokesperson of Ashtavinayaka Films says, “Yes, we have definitely signed Salman for a film but we would not like to disclose our financial agreements. The film will go on the floors in mid- 2008 and the script, and the director is still being finalised.”
There is always a stiff competition among the three heroes in Bollywood - Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan for the number one spot.
In 2011 Salman Khan has now raced his way to the top – not in films but in a different way. Salman has paid an advance income tax of five crore rupees and has therefore become the number one tax payer among Bollywood heroes.
Bollywood Dream Girl Hema Malini was thrilled when she was presented with her life-size portrait by noted painter brothers Krishn and Govind Kanhai at a function here Monday evening.
"I am absolutely delighted and thrilled by this painting," said a smiling Hema, thanking the Kanhai brothers for the painting. The actress, who is an accomplished dancer and also a member of the Rajya Sabha, is shown seated, wearing a traditional multi-coloured sari, in the painting.
The brief presentation ceremony was held at the Nehru Centre in south-central Mumbai in the presence of the city's glitterati and art aficionados, including Pratibha Advani, daughter of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani.
Govind, the younger Kanhai sibling, told IANS that the oil canvas took 40 days to complete with the help of older brother Krishn.
"Hema is an old family friend, a great dancer who loves art and she has a golden heart. She mentioned once jocularly why we did not make her painting. So we took up the challenge and she even posed for us for this work," Govind explained.
A five-day-long Kanhai painting exhibition is being held here, after a gap of four years. It closes Tuesday. On display is a rare painting worth Rs.20 million depicting Hindu gods Krishna and Radha.
2011/9/1 11:21:48 Salman Khan seems to be on an Eid hattrick -- after "Wanted" and "Dabangg", the actor's newly-released film "Bodyguard" has earned Rs.22 crore net on the first day of the release in the domestic market.
The action-packed drama in which Salman has teamed up with Kareena Kapoor was released on Eid-ul-Fitr Wednesday. His "Wanted" and "Dabangg" too released on Eid in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
"The response to the film has been amazing. We had estimated the collection to be Rs.20 crore on the first day and it went on to be Rs 21.5-22 crore net, which are phenomenal figures for the first day," Priti Shahani, chief strategy and marketing officer, Reliance Entertainment, told IANS.
"Salman, no doubt, is the biggest driving factor as he has a huge fan following. A good release date is extremely crucial on the theatrical side and Salman and Eid are indeed a lethal combo," she added.
Made at an approximate budget of Rs.60 crore, the film released in India with 2,600 prints and 325 prints overseas. Shahani said they haven't yet got the figures for overseas collection.
A Hindi-remake of the Malayalam film of the same name, "Bodyguard" has been directed by Siddique and co-produced by Salman's brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri and Reliance Entertainment.
Shahani predicts that the film will cross the Rs.100-crore mark in the very first week.
"Looking at the unprecedented response to the film, 'Bodyguard' is likely to cross the Rs.100-crore mark in its first week," she said.
With an extended weekend, multiplex owners are hoping to make good business.
"The opening has been nice, the occupancy has gone up to 80 percent. People are liking the film. We are hoping for a good weekend and expect the occupancy to go up to 100 percent," said Munish, managing director (marketing) of Satyam Cineplex.
Yogesh Raizada, of Waves Cinemas calls the film a treat for Salman fans.
"It's a complete Salman Khan with lots of action and some comedy. People are enjoying the film. On the first day, the occupancy was around 80 to 90 percent in the suburbs and in the NCR region. We hope an equally good response over the weekend," he said. (IANS)
Following Priyanka Chopra’s less-than-impressive turn as the host of Khatron Ke Khiladi 3, there is a tough choice for her replacement when the show’s fourth season gets underway. The makers, it’s said, are oscillating between Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan for the spot. The former, who has successfully hosted the first two seasons of the show, is a strong contender to reappear.
However, Salman Khan, who was a bit hit in his avatar as television host of Bigg Boss and Dus Ka Dum, is also being touted as the next action hero, following the success of Dabangg. His forthcoming films, Bodyguard, Ready and Dabangg 2 are also similar action-packed ventures, and the makers of Khatron Ke Khiladi feel that Salman would suit the show’s format and content.
With not much separating the two heroes, the question of who gets to host the fourth season may well depend on the price factor. For the first two seasons of the show, it was said that Akshay was paid Rs 2.5 crore per episode. Salman, meanwhile, got paid nearly Rs 3.5 crore for Bigg Boss.
