Rail Roko a success, Kodandaram warns Centre of more

2011/7/14 12:52:49 Even as rail movement in the Telangana region came to a virtual standstill on Thursday as agitators demanding a separate state stopped several trains as part of a 12-hour long Rail Roko agitation, Telangana Political Joint Action Committee convenor M Kodandaram warned the Centre to brace up for a much more intensified stir from August 1.

If the Centre does not agree to our demand and make a statement on the separate Telangana state formation, we will intensify our agitation from August 1, this time with the active participation of all employees in the region, Prof Kodandaram warned.

He was speaking after stopping the Delhi-Hyderabad Dakshin Express at Ghatkesar along with Bharatiya Janata Party leader Indrasena Reddy and separate statehood activists.

Prof Kodandaram demanded that the Centre immediately announce the formation of Telangana state in a time-bound manner and also sought a concrete assurance from the Centre on the separate statehood demand.

Elsewhere, raising Jai Telangana slogans, activists belonging to almost all pro-separate statehood parties, including the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Bharatiya Janata Party, the Telugu Desam Party, besides students and in some cases employees squatted on the railway tracks at various places, including Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts of the region, and stopped rail movement.

Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya and other party leaders were taken into custody at the Secunderabad railway station here when they tried to disrupt the rail traffic.

Mr Dattatreya told media persons while being led away that the "Centre cannot suppress the Telangana agitation by arresting the protests and resorting to repressive measures. It will have to accept the separate statehood demand.

TRS MLA D Vinay Bhaskar along with his party workers staged the rail roko in Warangal district.

The South Central Railway, anticipating the inconvenience likely to be caused to the passengers, had already announced the cancellation of 31 Express and 116 Passenger trains, partially cancelled 20 Express and 14 Passenger trains, rescheduled 23 and diverted 23 Express trains. The SCR had also cancelled all 51 DHMU (Diesel Hydraulic Multiple Unit) services in Telangana and MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) trains in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Besides this, the Railways Ministry had also issued a travel advisory for people against being careful in choosing their mode of transportation while travelling in the region.
The Tirupati-Secunderabad Narayanadri Express was stopped at Chityala in Nalgonda district, Tirupati-Secunderabad Padmavati Express and the Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad Express trains were stopped by protestors at Bibini Nagar station, while the Kakinada-Hyderabad Goutami Express was stopped up in Warangal district.

The transportation of coal from the Singareni Collieries Company Limited was also hit as goods trains were stopped at Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam districts.(INN)

Arrests, protests mark Day 2 of 'Rail Roko'

2011/10/16 14:34:10 Protests and arrests marked the second day of Rail Roko agitation across the Telangana region on Sunday.

The arrest of several prominent leaders including MPs and MLAs a day before had a visible impact on the protests held across the region. Protests were reported from Nalgonda, Warangal, Khammam, Mahaboobnagar and Nizamabad districts on Sunday. About 40 activists of CPI (New Democracy) including former MLA G Narasaiah were arrested when they staged protests in Karaypalli mandal of Khammam district. Another group of Telangana activists were taken into custody for squatting on rail tracks at Gandhipuram.

Several BJP activists were taken into custody for participating in the Rail Roko agiation near Alair Railway Station in Nalgonda district. Some TRS activists were arrested in Warangal for holding protests near Chintal Bridge in Warangal district. Former minsiter Jupally Krishna Rao too was arrested for participating in an agitation at Divitipally in Bhootpur mandal of Mahaboobnagar district.

Meanwhile, some miscreants have reportedly removed 150 fish plates of railway tracks in Biknoor mandal of Nizamabad district on Sunday. The Railway Police has started investigations into the incident.

The train services in the entire Telangana region remained paralysed for the second consecutive day on Sunday. South Central Railway which operated some trains on Saturday did not restore any cancelled train on Sunday. The SCR had cancelled 124 passenger trains while many others were partially cancelled, diverted or rescheduled.

Meanwhile, most of the leaders who were arrested for participating in the Rail Roko agitation were released on bail on Sunday. TRS MP Vijayashanti and eight others were released by a court on a bond of Rs 10,000 and two sureties each. Telangana Jagruthi president K Kaviath who was arrested at Moula Ali Railway Station under the Railway Protection Act also got bail. TRS MLA K Tarakarama Rao was also released on bail.

However, Karimangar MP Ponnam Prabhakar and former minister T Jeevan Reddy have been shifted to Karimnagar Central Prison on Sunday prison. The court has remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody. TRS MLA T Harish Rao too has been sent to 13-day judicial custody by a magistrate in Medak. The magistrate has posted the decision on his bail petition for Monday. Life in T paralyzed with strike

    2011/9/24 11:23:14
Already paralysed life went into the coma in the entire Telangana region on Saturday with almost all services coming to a grinding halt.

Following a two-day 'Rail Roko' call given by pro-Telangana organisations, the South Central Railway itself halted all its operations in the region. The SCR cancelled 55 express trains, diverted 55, partially cancelled 48, rescheduled 48 and regulated two other trains originating from, coming to or passing through the Telangana region. In addition, as many as 102 pairs of passenger trains have been fully or partially cancelled and 222 MMTS services and 102 DHMU trains in the twin cities were cancelled. All the railway stations wore a deserted look and passengers were seen only at the counters to collect their refund for cancellation of tickets.

The leaders of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India-ML New Democracy and other groups protested on the tracks across the Telangana region on Saturday demanding statehood for Telangana.

Considered city's lifeline, over 50,000 auto-rickshaws too went off the roads for 48-hours from Saturday. Although the auto-rickshaw unions were originally demanding increase in the auto-fares due to hike in petrol rates, but they too joined the T-chorus and this time they linked their strike with the Sakala Janula Samme. However, some auto-rickshaw drivers who plied on Saturday made a killing by charging exorbitant amounts from the needy passengers.

Over 10,000 public transport buses too remained off the road on the sixth consecutive day due to participation of RTC employees from the Telangana in the general strike. The management tried in vain on Saturday to convince the employees' unions to call off the strike, at least partially. The road blockades too continued at several places and buses coming from Seemandhra region or other States were denied entry by the Telangana activists. According to a report, four Hyderabad-bound Volvo buses coming from Guntur were damaged by some unknown Telangana activists near Maal of Chintaplli mandal in Nalgonda district.

Following a bandh call given by Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee, the petrol bunks in the twin cities too remained shut. While some private schools located in residential areas functioned and conducted the quarterly examination, a majority of schools remained closed. Almost all government and private educational institutions too remained closed. Although the attendance in private establishments was thin, but it did not had a major impact due to weekend.

Meanwhile, the State Government has intensified security across the region. In view of clashes between the Telugu Desam Party and TRS workers on Friday, the State police has also begun the process of identify 'politically sensitive' locations on the lines of 'communally sensitive' places. While large number of security personnel was deployed near railway stations, elaborate security arrangements were also made at the residences and offices of Congress and TDP leaders.
Commercial establishments, shopping malls and cinema theatres in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad witnessed very less footfall on Saturday. (INN)
