Telangana panel calls for militant struggle

2011/9/23 18:18:58 The Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) has asked people of the region to be prepared for militant struggle to achieve separate statehood from Andhra Pradesh.

JAC convenor M. Kodandaram said an action plan would be announced in two days.

He said this after the Andhra Pradesh government rejected the demand to postpone the Group I main examination of the AP Public Service Commission (APPSC) in view of the ongoing "people's strike" in Telangana.

Kodandaram warned that the government and the APPSC would be responsible for the consequences of conducting the examination.

How can the government conduct the examination in such a tense atmosphere, asked Kodandaram, referring to the ongoing strike in Telangana by government employees, teachers, miners, workers of state-owned Road Transport Corporation, lawyers and other sections of people.

Nearly 10,500 aspirants are expected to write the exams, scheduled to be held from Sep 25 to Oct 3, at five centres, including Hyderabad and Warangal in Telangana.

A group of candidates met Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy Friday evening, urging him to postpone the exam in view of the general strike.

They said with state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) buses not plying and two-day rail blockade and autorickshaw strike starting Saturday, they would not be able to reach the exam centres.

The chief minister, however, made it clear that exams would not be postponed.

The APPSC had conducted Group I prelims in Sep last year despite protests by Telangana groups. As the protestors disrupted the exams at some centres, the APPSC later conducted re-exam for affected candidates.

The government last month conducted written test for recruitment of sub-inspectors of police amid tight security as Telangana groups had threatened to disrupt it.
